Commonly Used Terms in Education
Assessment
The process of testing or evaluating your skills. Many schools and language programs require you to have your mathematics or language skills assessed before registering for classes.
Canadian language benchmark or CLB
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) describe 12 levels of ability in each of four language skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The CLB is used in Canada to describe the language ability of people learning English. Think of them as levels, your English or French language level when communicating.
CLIC
Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada. French classes.
The French equivalent of LINC. To attend CLIC classes, you must complete an assessment before registering.
Course
The name of the degree or diploma program you are enrolled in and looking to complete. For example, you are registered in a language course program.
ESL
English as a Second Language. To attend ESL classes, you must complete an assessment before registering.
Elementary
Primary education is generally for kids 5 to 12 years old. This usually includes preschool (optional) or kindergarten.
LINC
LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) is a program that provides language training to newcomers. Before registering for LINC classes, you are required to complete an assessment.
Literacy
Understanding the basics, evaluating, using, and engaging with the subject matter.
For example, computer literacy means you can understand and use the computer.
Loans
You borrow money. You will have to pay it back.
Ontario Adult Learning Definitions
The Ontario Government's website has a page of terms and definitions of words and acronyms to help you better understand adult education programs.
Preschool
Optional school for young children between 3 and 4 years old. They would attend this before kindergarten.
Post-secondary
Also called college, university, or higher education. Typically taken after completing high school. You will need to apply to attend a post-secondary institution.
Scholarship
A grant or payment made to support paying for a student's education, awarded based on accomplishments and academic achievements. You can apply for scholarships to help pay for your school. You typically are not required to pay this back.
Secondary
Also called high school. Secondary education is generally for kids 14 to 18 years old. This group usually includes Grades 9 to 12.
Tuition
Is the cost of attending private schools, colleges, universities, or specific programs.
Upgrade
An opportunity to improve your education or skills for the next part of your career or when you plan to attend college or university.
